A French phrase, (en) plein air, has the literal translation of 'in the open air.' It is used to describe a style of paintings or drawings created in the moment, primarily from nature and infused with a feeling of the open air. While painting, the artist must be able to adapt quickly to the changing conditions produced by Mother Nature: color, weather, dramatic lighting and shadows. The artist's challenge is to create an impression of a scene, capturing the atmosphere, feeling and immediacy of the moment. Plein Air painting is currently sweeping the art world as a fast growing and widely appreciated art form. Experience Spring City Plein Air painting. Combine our beautiful, pastoral scenes and historic pioneer homes and you can see why Spring City and Plein Air painting are a perfect match. Discover the talents of the professional visiting artists and age-old techniques behind this exciting art phenomenon and become a part of our flourishing local arts scene. Painting by artists en plein air will be done on locations at artists discretion in, around Spring City and through out Sanpete county. Artists set up their easels and paint boxes at scenic locations and paint their impressionistic art masterpieces. Public attendance is encouraged during the whole competition. Walk around town and watch the artists painting their favorite scene. Watch the artist, as they use their talents and brushes to re-create scenes on their canvas. You can also experience historic Spring City with a self-guided tour of pioneer homes and buildings. If you can only attend Saturday, make sure you arrive early to select your favorite painting before it is purchased, then tour the artist studios of nationally and locally known talents of Spring City residence artists. Event Schedule: At the completion of the 3-day painting competition the finished paintings are judged and winners will be announced at 10:00am on Saturday, September 20. On Saturday, an open art show and sale will showcase the paintings completed that week from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Additional paintings brought by the competition artists will be available to purchase at the art sale. Event Location: The 2008 Plein Air Competition will be held through out the town of Spring City, With the Art Show and Sale events being held in downtown Spring City on Main Street.
