The subtitle for Nielsen's Symphony No. 4 is a reference, not to the piece itself, but to the elemental will to live. However, you will also find the symphony has elements that are difficult to extinguish as it is among the most dramatic that Nielsen wrote, featuring a battle between two sets of timpani.
