Join the Utah Arts Council on May 8 and 9 for the Mountain West Conference on the Arts. This two day event features workshops, networking, speakers, hands-on art instruction, and the Governor Leadership in the Arts Awards Luncheon.

Plenary Address: award winning documentary film maker Dodge Billingsley, "To be an Artist in Mao's China: Creativity, Repression and Innovation".  This address coincides with the current exhibit at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center "From the Masses to the Masses, Art of the Yan’an Cave Artists Group" curated by Dodge Billingsley.

Keynote Address – best-selling poet, author, and lecturer David Whyte, "Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity".  This address will touch on how work is of enormous consequence to human beings. Work can be worrying and burdensome but approached rightly it can also be life giving and an absolute gift to others. At its best work is an intimate conversation between what you think is you and what you think is other than you, a place of self discovery and a place we become more visible and knowable to ourselves and to others.

Workshops include: negotiating Second Life and other social networking sites, locating and programming alternative performance sites, how to pitch stories to the media, the new world of the non-profit arts, painterly drawing, and many others.

The Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Awards have been one of the highest honors given to individuals, businesses, and organizations in the arts in Utah since 1980.
    2008 Recipients Include:
Arts Education Leadership Award - Ferron Holt, Educator, Washington County School District
Community Leadership Award - Gail Bunker, St. George City Council Member
Legislative Leadership Award - Greg Hughes, District 51 Representative, Utah House of Representatives
Lifetime Leadership Award - Ruth Draper, Former Director, Utah Arts Council

I loved the presentation today by Shannon McQuade on incorporating art in healthcare. What an amazing idea - one we should all support.
