Three Chefs, Three courses, Three hours

Salt Lake City- The Downtown Farmers Market presents the fourth annual Chef Showdown in historic Pioneer Park (300 West and 300 South). Three chefs will have one hour to prepare three courses, using food (plus one secret ingredient) they purchase at the Market the morning of September 12th—think Iron Chef with the Farmers Market as the pantry. Local chefs vie for the privilege of joining in this fun but heated competition each year.

The Downtown Alliance is pleased to feature two chefs from new restaurants and one new chef from an established downtown hotspot. Participating chefs are: Adam Kreisel (Tipica), Nathan Powers (Bambara) and Sean Wilde (Gracie’s). “Salt Lake restaurants have access to some of the freshest produce in Utah sourced from the best local organic growers here at the Market. I’m excited to infuse these seasonal flavors into my menus for this challenge," said Nathan Powers, executive chef at Bambara.

Imagine having only 3 hours to shop, create and produce an award-winning meal in front of a discriminating audience of hundreds. “I do my best work on the fly,” said Adam Kreisel, executive chef at Tipica—a Caputo project and Utah’s first “nose to tail” restaurant. The Chef Showdown is an opportunity to see three world-class chefs in action using their celebrated creativity and culinary expertise.

The secret ingredient must be used in the appetizer, entrée and dessert. Chefs will be given time to plan their menu and $60 to shop at the Market for the finest and freshest products from local growers and food vendors. They’ll choose from plums, peaches, berries, heirloom tomatoes, greens, sweet corn, melons, herbs, carrots, artisan cheese, lamb, beef, seafood and much more.

A panel of local critics, including Marguerite Henderson, Mary Malouf and Kathy Stephenson will sample the seasonal cuisine and select the winners. Awards will be presented for the best chef and most creative dish. KRCL radio personality Circus Brown will emcee the event.

    Schedule:

10:30 a.m.: Introductions and show begins

10:45-11:30 a.m.: Menu planning and shopping
    11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Cooking

12:30-1:00 p.m.: Final judging and awards

The Chef Showdown promotes the 7th annual downtown Dine O’ Round (presented by the Downtown Alliance and American Express). Thirty-one of Salt Lake City’s best downtown restaurants extend a special invitation to enjoy dining at an exceptional price. In addition to the regular menu, participating restaurants offer a three-course dinner for $15 or $30 per person; some also offer a two-course lunch for $10.
