February 18-February 20, 2010
Add Review/Comment
Some of the top names in American Jazz are
teaming up for the Thanksgiving Point Peaks Jazz Festival on Feb. 18, 19 and
20 in the Show Barn. Featuring award-winning saxophonists, composers,
trumpeters, pianists and bands, the Festival provides the perfect weekend of
entertainment for jazz aficionados and novices alike.
The festival brings together Emmy and Grammy award-winning saxophonist and
composer Gordon Goodwin, world-renowned trumpeter Wayne Bergeron, Los
Angeles-based contemporary saxophonist Eric Marienthal and Grammy-winning
drummer Dave Weckl.
Goodwin headlines the Big Phat Band, which includes Bergeron and
Marienthal. The group has released five albums and earned two Grammy
nominations. Goodwin also scored several films including Remember the
Titans, The Majestic, National Treasure, Armageddon and Con Air,
among others. He has recorded with artists as diverse as Mel Torme, Ray
Charles and Christina Aguilera, and served as guest conductor for the London
Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
Trumpeter Bergeron, who has played with some of the top jazz artists in the
country, earned a Grammy nomination for his first solo big band CD in 2004
and is the namesake for a custom Yamaha trumpet. Marienthal also earned two
Grammys for his work and has played saxophone with everyone from Burt
Bacharach and Barabra Streisand to the Yellowjackets and B.B. King. Weckl, a
highly acclaimed Jazz fusion drummer, earned a Grammy and has released ten
recordings since 1990, three under his own name and seven with the Dave
Weckl Band.
Another highlight of the festival is the Crescent Super Band. Often
regarded as the top high school-aged jazz band in the world, the group
features 22 Utah teenagers. The Band performed in some of the worlds most
prominent music festivals, earned four Best of State awards in Utah and
released five full-length albums including What is Hip, featuring Saturday
Night Live band leader Lenny Pickett.
Additional performers include jazz guitarist Corey Christiansen, La Onda
Caribena, the Soul Research Foundation and the Little Big Band. Performers
will join forces for a nightly jam session at the end of each show.
