Music Director Keith Lockhart will lead guest cellist Alban Gerhardt and the Utah Symphony in Dvorak's 'Cello Concerto' on a program that also includes Strauss' 'Ein Heldenleben'. There will be a Finishing Touches dress rehearsal on Friday, April 10th at 10:00 am. The program opens as Gerhardt joins the orchestra for Dvorak's 'Cello Concerto', which references the composer's native Bohemia and features romantic and lyrical themes. Next, the orchestra will present Strauss' 'Ein Heldenleben' (A Hero's Life), which includes six sections titled 'The Hero,' 'The Hero's Adversaries,' 'The Hero's Companion,' 'The Hero's Battlefield,' 'The Hero's Works of Peace' and 'The Hero's Retreat from the World and Fulfillment.' The work features the nosiest and most chaotic battle scenes in all of music. After early successes at competitions and his debut as a 21-year-old with the Berlin Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, Alban Gerhadt started his career seventeen years ago, which led him to more than 160 different orchestras worldwide. Among them are the top European and American orchestras led by conductors such as Kurt Masur, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Neville Marriner, Marek Janowski, Sir Colin Davis, Leonard Slatkin, Fabio Luisi, Sakari Oramo and Neeme Järvi. In the past two years he's had debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony, National Symphony and NDR Hamburg, San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic at Hollywood Bowl and Disney Hall. Alban Gerhardt's repertoire is extensive. He has played more than 50 different cello concerti, among them some new discoveries. His collaboration with composers like Unsuk Chin, Peteris Vasks, Brett Dean, Jorg Widmann, Osvaldo Golijov, Mathias Hinke and Matthias Pintscher demonstrate his interest in enlarging the cello repertoire.
