Principal Bassist of the Utah Symphony, David Yavornitsky will conduct some of the state's elite youth musicians as they play side-by-side with the Utah Symphony on a program that includes Wagner's Lohengrin: Prelude to Act III and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 in C Minor ('Little Russian'). The evening will open as 18-year-old Conlan Miller joins the orchestra to perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor. Eighteen year old Conlan Miller of Delta, Utah, is currently a freshman at Brigham Young University majoring in Piano Performance where he continues to study with Dr. Irene Peery-Fox. Conlan recently performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.3 Mvt. III with the BYU Philharmonic as part of the Evening of Concertos. He performed the first movement of the same concerto with the Utah Valley Symphony last year. In May 2006, he played Rachmaninoff's complete Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Utah Symphony. At the invitation of Associate Conductor, Scott O'Neil, Conlan was a guest artist and actor in the 2005 Beethoven Alive! musical-drama with the Utah Symphony, portraying the role of young Beethoven and performing some of his greatest works, including the finale of Beethoven's Concerto No.3. Conlan's first appearance with the Utah Symphony was in the 2003 Salute to Youth concert. His first opportunity to solo with a symphony was at age 11 when he performed George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Utah Valley Symphony. Conlan has also soloed with the Southwest Symphony and the American Fork Symphony. Conlan was the Music Sterling Scholar for Delta High School during the 2007-2008 school year. He has taught private piano lessons for five years and at age 16 released his first solo album consisting of favorite classical repertoire. He enjoys performing in church, school, and community events. As Principal Bassist of the Utah Symphony, David Yavornitzky has performed as concerto soloist, participated in U.S. and International tours, and has collaborated with many of the world's finest guest artists. As a conductor, David has led many diverse ensembles, including area youth, collegiate and professional orchestras. In 2007 Mr. Yavornitzky was appointed to the position of Cover Conductor for the Utah Symphony's educational programs. He is a tireless proponent of contemporary music, having had compositions written for him, as well as having given important premieres of contemporary works, including the Cleveland premiere of Hans Werner Henze's Concerto for the Double Bass.
