Little Women is the remarkable new production based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott with book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. Based on Alcott’s own family experiences, Little Women follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. The year is 1866, and as Little Women opens, we see Jo March enacting her Operatic Tragedy for Professor Bhaer, her neighbor in New York. Her “blood and guts” saga is clearly not to his taste. He suggests she is capable of more refined writing. After he leaves, Jo ponders whether her writing was better years before, back home in Concord, Mass. Reminiscing about those days, Jo reflects on her life years earlier. Jo’s family is poor, and her father is away serving in the Civil War. To help support the family, Jo has taken up helping her Aunt March, who worries that Jo is not a proper lady. Aunt March offers to bring Jo with her to Europe– if she can change her ways. What follows has become a touchstone of American literature and will no doubt become so in musical theater.
