It is helpful if you explore Michael David Hall's work as if you were first looking at one of Picasso's abstract paintings, a Miro or a Keith Haring. Hall's work explores the process of creating art; the art is a record of what is happening in his head, transferred via drawing to standard size rag board. Most simply described, Hall is telling a story in each piece he completes, a story that becomes layered and more complex as he goes on; the final product being something that one may dive into and investigate image by image, often discovering, what was recognizable is lost in the folds of life, if you will. His work is worth investigating and once experienced it resonates in your mind. This work will continue to challenge you and force you to study the surface for yet another message that may have gone unnoticed the time before. Michael has publicly displayed his work since 1988 although he has been at work with this series since 1974. It is remarkable that in only the past fifteen years he has been more highly awarded than most artists will in a life time. The prestigious organizations to acknowledge Michael David Hall's work are: The Drawing Center, NYC (2007 artist registry), The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation (2003 individual support grant), The Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation (1998 individual support grant), the Utah Visual Arts Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship (1992). To our knowledge, he is the only artist in Utah to receive such recognition.
