Guest conductor Hugh Wolff will lead world-famous pianist Peter Serkin in Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments and Mozart's Concert-rondo for Piano in D Major on a program that includes Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture and Nielsen's 4th Symphony ('The Inextinguishable'). The performance opens with Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture, which serves as the introduction to Act II of his opera Benvenuto Cellini and depicts the bustle of Carnival season (just before Lent). Then, Serkin will join the orchestra to perform Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, which features a contrast between two instrumental forces: the soloist and the larger ensemble. Next, Serkin and the orchestra will present Mozart's Concert-rondo for Piano, which features the repeated use of the light-hearted main theme, which will be played by the soloist, by the orchestra and by the soloist and orchestra together. The evening will close with Nielsen's 4th Symphony, also known as 'The Inextinguishable,' which refers to the will to live. A product of war years, the symphony has more intense and even violent sounds than Nielsen's other works.
