Present Tense takes off where the 337 Project ended. Before it would be demolished to make way for their new home, building owners Adam and Dessi Price invited over 140 artists, from emerging to established, to paint every inch of their vacant property at 337 South 400 East. Although the Salt Lake Art Center does not organize juried exhibitions, there was no other method to narrow the field of artists for an exhibition. We invited Dr. Campbell Gray, Director of the BYU Museum of Art, to serve as a Guest Curator. He had the daunting task of whittling down to a number manageable in our galleries, selecting 22 works by 25 artists (three are collaborations) from the more than 75 submitted proposals. The main criteria for any proposal was that the artwork must have been inspired by and completed since the 337 Project closed in May 2007. Accompanying the exhibit will be two additional components that document the 337 Project from start to demolition: photographs by Lewis Francis and a film by the DaDa Factory team of Allie Johnston and Davey Davis.
