Reminiscent of a road trip through Southern Utah, Mark Knudsen's linear landscapes capture the vast panorama of the desert. Arid and beautifully subtle in palette his paintings accurately describe the odd and wonderful wind carved rock of that area. Knudsen studied fine art at the U of U in '69 and '70. In the early '70's he took a position in the Art department at the Salt Lake Tribune and became Head of Design Features in 1989. A few years ago he retired to become a full time artist. He now spends his days in his studio painting along side his recent wife/fellow artist, Leslie Thomas. He has participated in numerous shows including the Utah Biennial. With his quirky, imaginative, often humorous recycled sculpture, Malen Pierson has found great success at fine art festivals around the country. Pierson grew up in a metal fabrication family. He learned from his father to weld at an early age, giving him a love for metal and an interest in how he might turn that metal into art. Pierson also has affection for the earth and the environment. Due in large part to his desire to help clean up communities, he only uses recycled materials in his sculpture. Salvaging pieces from old cars and machinery, Pierson breaths new life into parts that would otherwise be considered junk. Rusted gears, hubcaps and tools become whimsical insects, animals and even people, making for a fun addition to a garden or home.
