Movement (R)Evolution Africa
July 21, 2008
The SLC Film Center Presents Movement (R)Evolution Africa, an astonishing film in which nine African choreographers from Senegal to South Africa tell the stories of an emergent art form and their diverse and deeply contemporary expressions of self. Revering the body as a form of fluid sculpture, these fierce artists from across the continent adapt conventional dance to their unique sense of self. Movement is their voice and it screams in this film! With performances by RDT and the Janet Gray Dance Studio the movement transcends the silver screen to be a live part of the evenings program. Stunning choreography and riveting critiques challenge stale stereotypes of 'traditional Africa' to unveil soul-shaking responses to the beauty and tragedy of 21st century Africa. Two dance groups will perform in conjunction with the screening. The film is intended to expand and invigorate contemporary dance by illuminating critical innovations of African artists.

I've not only seen these children perform several times but I've hosted them in my home in Scotland three times and all I can say is they are outstanding human beings. Their capacity to love is overflowing. For children who have nothing, they're happy and make those around them feel happy. They sing and laugh and sing some more. The boys love to kick footballs/soccer balls around when ever they can. The girls are lovely and like girly things. Can you imagine experiencing ice cream for the first time when you've never tasted anything colder than water from a river? I've seen their expressions... If you can, I wholeheartedly recommend you take time out of your busy days to spend a few hours with these children. You will be the better for it and you'll never forget the experience. If my arms were long enough I'd wrap them around the entire group, all at once, just so I could feel all that love coming back to me. Collapse

I saw the movie and I was amazed how these folks can still have the stamina to perform these challenging punk rock songs. It's an opportunity of a lifetime to see them live!!
