On Wednesday August 6, the public is invited to join the international performers who will perform at Summerfest for a street dance on Bountiful's Historic Main Street. Residents can learn how people in other countries use dance and music to express their heritage and cultural values and then experience the fun themselves by actually learning dances and joining the performers as they dance into the warm summer night. During this family event participants will be able to buy hotdogs, drinks, ice cream, and souvenirs. Proceeds from the sales will support the programs offered by the Bountiful/Davis Art Center. This year 11 countries will be represented at the 2008 festival. We will have groups from China, Costa Rica, Greece, India, Israel, Mexico, Mongolia, Romania, Russia, Siberia, and the USA. The international opening ceremony has been scheduled for Thursday, August 7th at 6:00pm, in Bountiful City Park. All the invited countries will appear for an abbreviated performance that evening, as well as introductions of the sponsors and elected officials. The public is welcome to attend the opening ceremony along with dozens of invited guests and dignitaries. The featured artists for Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International are Walt Hunter and Jesus Silva. Hunter is a mentor who uses art to inspire troubled young people to change their lives. He and Mr. Silva, a talented artist and former gang member, perform a style of dueling art works that incorporate the artistic vision of each person. Hunter and Silva will demonstrate the process they use to create unique works of art each day during the festival. The 2008 Emerging Artist is Benjamin Davis. Benjamin has used art as means of expression since he was very young. He has always been interested in drawing, but through some very talented and encouraging high school teachers he started to learn how to paint. Benjamin has shown remarkable ability in any medium including acrylics, watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal and oil. This year Summerfest will also host the first ever International Organization of Folk Art (IOV) World Youth Congress. The IOV is a worldwide organization, which deals comprehensively with the preservation and promotion of popular culture, folk art, and intangible cultural heritage. The primary goal of IOV is to promote understanding and tolerance among peoples of the world through diversified cultural exchange activities, in maintenance of the ideal of world peace. Over 75 international visitors will attend the conference, which will include an exhibition of Ming Dynasty Ceramics, a cooking demonstration, tours of the authentic Bountiful-Frank Lloyd Wright House, and an ancient working silk weaving loom that stands 18 feet tall. IOV events will be open to the public. The schedule of exhibits and events will be available on the BDAC website. Activities for Children: The Children's Art Yard at Summerfest 2008 will be fun for the whole family. Admission for the Children's Art Yard only is $3 and includes the material for all art activities. Group discounts and discount tickets will be available. Any one who is interested in information about the Children's Art Yard can contact Trixee Buckingham at BDAC. Public Transportation: Friday, August 8 is Utah Transit Authority Day and Saturday, August 9 is Davis County Municipalities Day. UTA encourages Summerfest visitors who will be attending the festival from Salt Lake County to use FrontRunner to the Woods Cross station and take the free shuttle to the park.
