Mountain Trails Foundation and the Park City Recreation Advisory Board announced today that they will offer a new series of guided historic hikes this summer. The free tours will be offered on four Sundays, July 20, August 17, September 14 and 21. Co-organizer Mike O'Malley says of the upcoming tours, 'These hikes are designed to be 50 percent exercise, 50 percent learning and 100 percent fun. Hike organizers will highlight some of the area's mining history along the way, and participants are encouraged to share their own knowledge of local history, too. Locals and visitors alike will learn some new things about our natural and social history, and everyone will enjoy our great scenery.' Reservations are not necessary to participate in the hikes. Hikers should simply meet tour guides at the Sterling chairlift (mid-mountain at Deer Valley) at 9:30am on the appointed four Sundays. The hikes are scheduled to last three to four hours and will cover moderately strenuous terrain at Deer Valley Resort. Hike participants should be in good shape, wear sturdy footwear, carry plenty of water and snacks, and wear proper sun protection. The primary route for Deer Valley's hikes will start at Sterling chairlift, wind through the woods to the New York mine, then continue up to the ridge between Bald Mountain and Flagstaff peak for a dramatic view of the Wasatch Mountains. The return route will lead the group through high-mountain meadows and aspen and evergreen groves. Round trip distance for the hikes will be less than six miles, with an elevation gain of approximately 900 feet. In case of bad weather, an alternate route along the Mid-Mountain Trail will lead the groups from the Sterling chairlift to some mining sites near Empire Lodge and back.
