This is the true story of, John Merrick, a remarkably sensitive and intelligent man whose body was hideously deformed. Exploited by Victorian society and philanthropy, he is befriended by an ambitious and brilliant surgeon who looks after him in his last few years finding him a home in a London hospital. Merrick is soon introduced to high society, becoming dependent on the success and succumbing to the tragedy his deformity brings him. This triumphant theatrical work was also made into an Academy award winning movie of the same title, directed by David Lynch and starring John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins and Ann Bancroft. Winner of numerous Tony Awards including Best Play, 2008-09 marks the 30th Anniversary of one Broadway's greatest plays.
