The Talent Showcase concert will display the talents of several soloists, including singing cowboy Steve Downs and renowned violinist Doyle Armbrust. Downs, a Cedar City resident, has recorded his own CD entitled Lookin' Back, Movin On. He played with Bar G Wranglers for seven years, and now has his own band called the Red Hill Rangers. Armbrust, who recently moved to Chicago, made his solo debut with the Filarmonia das Beiras in Aveiro, Portugal. He has also been featured on NPR's Weekend Edition and Mozart's Sundays Live from the LA County Museum of Art in Los Angeles. OSU will also celebrate the orchestral genius of Leroy Anderson during the Talent Showcase, as part of the Leroy Anderson Centennial tribute taking place throughout the county. Anderson, born in 1908 to Swedish immigrants, became 'one of the great American masters of light orchestral music' according to famed movie score composer John Williams. 'Blue Tango' was the first instrumental recording ever to sell one million copies. The Christmas classic 'Sleigh Ride' is one of his most famous pieces. OSU will perform 10 of Anderson's best-known pieces: 'Trumpeter's Lullaby,' 'Bugler's Holiday,' 'Fiddle Faddle,' 'Blue Tango,' 'Jazz Pizzicato,' 'Old MacDonald Had a Farm,' 'The Typewriter,' 'The March of the Two Left Feet,' 'Girl in Satin,' 'The First Day of Spring,' and 'Chicken Reel.'
