what I thought I saw: Exhibit and Panel Discussion
September 11, 2008
Add Review/Commentwhat I thought I saw is an exhibit about people - a very diverse group of people, the way we see and judge them. It is about preconceptions; the mistakes we make and the stories we miss because we perceive the world through an imperfect and highly personal visual lens. On most days, we view an image, and instantly draw a conclusion about its meaning. We quickly move on with our lives, secure in our understanding of what we saw. what I thought I saw is based on a photo-essay book that challenges its audience to stop for a moment and question such certainty. As the stories unravel the complicated and unexpected lives behind the photos, the reader too must deconstruct the layers of misconceptions, biases and stereotypes behind the initial glance. This exhibit was created by artists Peta Owens-Liston, Sasha Pollack, Kim Silcox, and Amy Albo. Opening Reception: what I thought I saw Reception and Panel Discussion on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30pm. Join us for wine and cheese as we explore this engaging exhibit and a panel discussion hosted by NPR radio personality Jenny Brundin. Panel members include: Dr. Paul White Ph.D., whose research focus is on persuasion, prejudice/ethnic issues, and performance and what motivates behavior in these areas, Steve Mikita, diagnosed at 15 months with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and doctors claimed that he would be dead by his 2nd birthday. At 43 years old, Steve (now a lawyer and adjunct professor at BYU) provides us with a visionary life full of happiness and challenges, and Rabbi Benny Zippel, the only Orthodox Rabbi in Utah and director of Chabad Lubavitch of Utah.
