A young boy tells the story of growing up in a fatherless home with his unmarried mother and four spinster aunts in 1930s Ireland. Their humble, joyful lives are interrupted by the arrival of two men: the boy's long-lost father, who is going off to Spain to fight the war against Franco, and an elderly uncle who has come home after a lifetime in Africa. Life goes on as before for the boy and five sisters, until something happens that tears apart the fabric of their lives.
