SPOKEN & WRITTEN WORD POETRY & LITERATURE

Memory and the Media - Christopher Benson
January 23, 2009
Add Review/CommentChristopher Benson is co-author (with Mamie Till-Mobley) of Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime that Changed America. Emmett Till, a 14-year-old boy from Chicago, was brutally murdered in August 1955 while visiting relatives in Mississippi. His mother's courageous decision to have an open casket at the funeral 'empowered the media to nationalize the lynching.' Benson and two other guests will discuss how images published 50 years ago continue to resonate in popular culture. Death of Innocence received the 2004 BlackBoard Nonfiction Book of the Year award and the 2003 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award Special Recognition.
