Weber State University Department of Performing Arts presents the New American Philharmonic, conducted by David Van Alstyne in the Austad Auditorium, Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts. The program includes Chopin (Les Sylphides); Franz Strauss (Horn Concerto, Op.8, c minor) with Horn Soloist: Steve Park; Liadov (Enchanted Lake, Op. 62); Stravinsky (Firebird: Berceuse and Finale, the 1919 version) and Smetana (Má vlast: No.2, Die Moldau). Soloist Steve Park graduated from Central Washington University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. In 2001 he received his Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Utah. When Mr. Park came to Ogden High School in the fall of 2000 there were 38 students in band and 11 in orchestra. There are now over 100 in band and 50 in orchestra. He currently teaches 4 band classes (Marching Band, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band and Concert Band) a guitar class, and 3 orchestra classes (Symphony Orchestra, Advanced Orchestra and Intermediate Orchestra) at Ogden High School. Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra routinely receive Superior ratings at region and state festivals. The Symphony Orchestra has been the top 3A orchestra at the state festival for the last 7 years running. They have also been the featured high school orchestra at the UMEA Convention in St. George, Utah. Ogden High's Marching Band was the outstanding band in the AA Marching Band Division in 2005 and again in 2007. They placed second in 2006. In 2005 Mr. Park was selected by the Utah Music Education Association as Outstanding High School Music Educator for the state of Utah for 2003-04 school year. Mr. Park also runs a very popular percussion ensemble called BEATnics, which performs at concerts, school assemblies, and anywhere else where their particular brand of enthusiasm is appreciated. Mr. Park is currently adjunct horn professor at both Utah State University and Weber State University He has been an adjunct horn teacher at Southern Utah University and Dixie State College. In addition to teaching, Mr. Park is an active studio recording musician, plays in the pit orchestra for Ballet West, performs occasionally as an extra with the Utah Symphony, and is associate principal horn of the Orchestra at Temple Square which performs with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Community musicians interested in joining the New American Philharmonic should contact Bruce Swenson, 510-5053. Rehearsals are scheduled in the Instrumental Rehearsal Room (BC133) in the evenings.
