Over the past decade, 217 innocent people have been exonerated and freed from America's prisons using DNA evidence. The exoneration of the innocent not only reveals that our criminal justice system makes mistakes, but also demonstrates factors behind those mistakes. One such factor is race-71% of DNA exonerations involved people of African American or Latino descent. Whether this disproportionate number is due to racial profiling, cross-racial eyewitness misidentification, police misconduct, or another cause, wrongful convictions demonstrate that race continues to play a troubling role in the criminal justice system. Panelists will discuss the role race and class play in the criminal justice system, particularly in the conviction of innocent people. One panelist-an innocent person who was wrongly convicted-will share his own story. An audience discussion will follow.
