Art at the Main will feature the work of Salt Lake painter John Hunter Stout, titled, A Very Small Art Collection. The exhibit will feature miniature paintings in watercolor and oil from dollhouse size (1/2 inch x 3/4 inch) up to 8 x10 inches. One might expect the painter of such tiny paintings to be small himself. But Stout stands six-feet-three-inches tall and spent his career as a field engineer working with gigantic mining machinery. His work took him to many different countries where, in his free time, he painted tiny paintings and left many behind through sales, barters, and gifts. This is one artist who can truly say his work is in collections worldwide. In the early 1990s, Stout and his wife began painting micro-miniature watercolors for dollhouse collectors who wanted authentic, original works for their dollhouses. Each original painting was matted, framed, signed, and numbered. The small gems were very popular with collectors who frequented weekend shows all over the United States and Canada. Says Stout, 'Our show schedule looked like a travel guide for North America.' Tired of working the miniature show circuit every weekend, Stout now sells his miniatures and slightly larger works of Art at the Main as well as on his web site. Always the innovator, Stout will feature in this exhibit his newest technique: reverse glass painting in miniature that is illuminated from behind. Stout signs his paintings 'J. Hunter Stout' to honor the memory of his stepfather who was killed in World War II before he could officially adopt young Johnny. The signature is Stout's way of remembering someone he loved and still misses.
