Dr. Shiren Mahdavi Ph.D. Associate Professor of History at the U of U, explores the different roles of women in Islamic cultures. Dr. Mahdavi served as Special Advisor to Her Royal Highness Princess Ashraf Pahlavi in which capacity she researched and proposed the formation of the Women's Organization of Iran. She has represented Iranian women on International Women's Day in the Soviet Union on the fiftieth anniversary of the Russian Revolution and has been the Iranian delegate to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Dr. Mahdavi will explore the questions: Why do women wear burkas in Afghanistan and chadors in Iran? Why are women are not permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia? Why can Muslim men have more than one wife? This fascinating talk will trace the position of women in Islam through historical roots.
