As part of the 2008-09 Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture Series, Westminster College is pleased to host a lecture on 'The Trouble with Diversity' by Dr. Walter Benn Michaels. Michaels is likely to reformulate the theme of this year's lecture series-'Why does diversity matter now?' to the claim, 'Diversity should not matter now.' In 'The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality,' he argues that the focus on diversity is misguided. Diversity should not matter now; if we are serious about addressing inequality, we should focus on class and classism. His controversial claim prompts us to think about what we mean by the concept 'diversity,' whether the concept is limited and what the best approaches to addressing structural inequalities are.
