One Enchanted Evening: Viennese Operetta

The Utah Opera concert One Enchanted Evening features four young professional opera singers in the roles of two couples who are going to a 'salon' evening around the year 1900. A salon event was a social gathering in a home in which one or many of the guests would provide the entertainment, generally singing or playing the piano. Some of the best music of the day came from the world of 'operetta,' a light, comic form of opera that became the foundation of what we know as American Musical Theatre today. One Enchanted Evening spins a drama between the couples as they sing, in salon style, some of the great music from the operetta tradition.

      It wasnt an opera. It was scenes from different operettas spliced together to make its own drama.
