Vienna was the site of two incredible periods of musical innovation. The First Viennese School included Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, who-while not an actual 'school'-all lived and worked in Vienna within the years between 1760 and 1830. The Second Viennese School emerged in the early 20th century and was populated with pupils and associates of Arnold Schoenberg. This collaborative and inventive group experimented with expressionism, atonality, and Schoenberg's 12-note technique. Jeff Bram is Vice President of Artistic Planning for Utah Symphony, and he loves all talk of music. Christian Arming is presently the Chief Conductor of the new Japan Philharmonic, but he was born in Vienna and studied conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
