The USUO will participate in Orchestras Feeding America, the first national food drive by America's symphony orchestras. Utah Symphony | Utah Opera's musicians, staff members and volunteers will collect non-perishable food at the concerts. The food will be donated to the Utah Food Bank. As a thank you, USUO will be offering 10% discount coupons to selected future concerts for those who donate on March 27 and 28. The performance will open with Williams' 'Suite from J.F.K.,' which comprises three numbers from Oliver Stone's 1992 film JFK. Then, Viviane Hagner will join the orchestra for Korngold's Violin Concerto, which features themes drawn from his own film scores, such as 'Another Dawn,' 'Juarez,' 'Anthony Adverse' and 'The Prince and the Pauper.' Next, the orchestra will perform three musical works by Charles Ives': 'Country Band March,' 'The Unanswered Question' and 'Symphony No. 3.' An American composer, born in 1874, Ives' music was virtually unknown until after his death, but he went on to become the father of American music. The evening will close with Ives' and Schuman's Variations on 'America,' which Ives originally composed for the organ based on the patriotic song 'My Country 'Tis of Thee.' When Schuman heard the piece he transcribed it and it has become Ives' most frequently played composition.
