Many have known Gary Vlasic as a treasured local artist with broad and varied experience in performance and visual arts. He has performed and directed dance-theatre since 1985. The bewitching and illusionary worlds he creates are richly textured, disturbing and beautiful. Having lived in Salt Lake City most of his life, Vlasic is acutely aware of the city's rhythms, movements and restrictions. He finds inspiration and tensions influential to his process. For this, his first solo show at Phillips Gallery, Gary Vlasic creates abstract figures from collage and mixed media applied to vellum. Again capturing the disturbing and beautiful, his work tantalizes the viewer with its many intricacies. Odd juxtaposing of body parts, elements of pop culture and just plain visionary design induce a minuet aloft the whisper of vellum. His many grants and awards include the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Grant, Foundation Grants and several Utah Arts Council Grants. Concurrent to this exhibit he is also in Residence with Trasa Urban Arts Organization to create a new full evening of performance-installation, entitled My Life in the Bush of Ghosts based on the musical score of David Byrne and Brian Eno and the Novel of the same name by Amos Tutuola. Helpful Information: There will be a artists stroll and reception on March 20 from 6:00pm-9:00pm.
