Cindy McConkie: Self-Focused Abstractions

After an absence of seventeen years, Cindy McConkie reentered college at the age of 37, when her last child entered kindergarten. Always a responsible mother and pragmatic wife of a school teacher, her decision to study art surprised everyone who knew her -- and McConkie herself. Dusting off her husband's Olympus OM1, McConkie began to see the world in a new way. She became highly conscious of light and how it gave beauty and character to the most ordinary objects. Instead of taking photos, McConkie felt photography take her. 'The first time I saw a print come up in the developer, I felt like a child watching a magic show,' she remembers. 'Everything was captivating and magical.' The images in this exhibit represent her most recent step in her evolution as an artist, her journey to find the beautiful in the ordinary and to discover universes with the miniscule. An artists reception will be held on April 18 from 4:00pm-5:30pm.
