In 2001, Patrice Showers Corneli experienced two tragic events: one personal, the death of her father; one public, the events of September 11. The tragedy inspired an exquisite melancholy that demanded a higher level of artistic expression than she had ever experienced. Out of the melancholy came experimental works using gouache, graphite, conté crayon, and soft pastels on a variety of art papers, often folded or torn. The combinations of these materials result in textural and naturalistic works that incorporate the colors, images and textures of the Southwest and the watery, atmospheric images of the northern plains and forest where she came of age.
