Nicknamed after a novel by Jean Paul Richter, Mahler specified his First Symphony was in no way "about" the book. With an offstage trumpet doubling the first trumpet melody "in the distance" and a funeral march based on the children's song "Fr?re Jacques", Titan showcases the darker side of Romanticism.
