When Art at the Main invited area schools to participate in producing art from recycled materials, they had no idea how creative the students would be. Two schools, Churchill Junior High and The Waterford School took up the challenge. Their collaborative student projects will be on display in the Urban Room of the main Salt Lake City Library, across from Art at the Main's gallery, with a reception on Saturday, May 9, from 4:00pm-5:45pm. Churchill art students, under the direction of teacher Tamara Searle, sought a way to reuse a few hundred corrugated plastic election campaign signs, largely donated by Hogle Zoo. They wanted to find a way to make a large sculpture by harnessing the individual creativity of the students. Students made their own sea creatures that will be suspended from a framework so that they can swim in the air currents of people passing. Meanwhile, Waterford students, under the guidance of teacher Suzanne Conine, have been collecting plastic bottles, used in the school and in students' homes, to construct an iceberg. Each bottle contains a colorful paper with a message about recycling. Viewers are encouraged to participate in the melting of the iceberg by taking a bottle away from the piece. Participants will extract their message and place the bottle in a recycling container. In addition, sculpture students have created arctic animals that will be displayed on 'ice flows' surrounding the iceberg. These clay sculptures are ghostly white with the exception of the black Raven (Waterford Mascot). If the Raven could talk it would ask, 'Are you recycling?'
