The concert is a final project for the Westminster College May term course, Medieval Music Performance. The music program covers nearly three centuries of European music from England and what is now France. Some of the oldest pieces include songs of the troubadours and their northern French counterparts, the trouveres. From the same period, the evocative lyrics of monks from Aquitaine and Cambridge and the very first English songs recorded with music in the English language will be performed. These single-voice melodies are accompanied by vielle (an ancestor of the violin), harp and medieval percussion. The Middle Ages also saw the birth of music for multiple voices. Simple embellishments of chant known as organum became increasingly complex and rhythmic, as seen in motets from Montpellier and later English carols. The program then traces the development of polyphony from two-voice organum through the rhythmic innovations of the Notre Dame school to the creative explosion of the 14th-century Ars Nova.
