Art at the Main will feature new works by Ogden landscape painter Debra Marin, with a reception during Gallery Stroll, on July 17 from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Titled It's a Bloomin' Desert, the exhibit includes works completed during the unusually wet spring which produced exceptional color in Utah's desert environment. The title also derives from Marin's frustrated exclamation upon seeing homes and businesses with automatic sprinklers wasting water in the midst of heavy rains. As a hiker in the hills and mountains east of Ogden, Marin says she has learned the plants, flowers, and birds that inhabit her walking trails. She's learned to anticipate their seasonal changes, and it's this familiarity and passion for the land that enlivens her works in oil and pastel. 'The nature of the land is what I seek,' says Marin. 'This knowledge, of how life and spirit are shaped, is what informs my art. I make at least two trips to southern Utah to paint every year, and I paint outdoors every week, from late winter to late fall, in the Ogden Valley and mountains,' says Marin. 'Sometimes I use my field studies to paint larger pieces in the studio in either oil or pastel.'
