In celebration of the 90th birthday of Ogden's favorite jazz musician, Jazz at the Station presents Joe McQueen, saxophone, Don Keipp, percussion, Clayton Furch, keyboard, and others. Well- behaved children are welcome. Guests are invited to come early and enjoy refreshments or a tour of Gallery at the Station. McQueen was born in 1919 and has been playing jazz since he was 16. He celebrated his 90th birthday May 30. Ogden City Council recently recognized him for his accomplishments and service to our community with a Council resolution. In addition to his excellent musical career, Joe has spent the last 20 years working 'The Ride' through Weber Human Services, providing transportation to more than 20 clients. Many of his clients are 20-30 years younger than he is. He has been an important part of local jazz since 1945, when he arrived in Ogden with a band that dissolved when its leader gambled away the troupe's earnings en route from Las Vegas. McQueen reorganized the band and stayed in Ogden. He has played with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie, to name a few. Jazz at the Station is a popular program designed for all ages and is a continuation of Jazz in the Skyroom and Jazz in the Junction, formerly held on the WSU campus. The program moved to Union Station when the Union Building remodeling began. The audience is seated in an informal setting at tables or regular seating throughout Grand Lobby, helping to create a club atmosphere. Families are invited to attend as long as children do not disturb the performers and other audience members. The Gallery at the Station will remain open for the audience.
