Our existence, lifestyles and economies depend on understanding and solving problems relating to Earth, Air, Energy and Water. RDT's opening concert for our 2009-2010 season features historic reconstructions, contemporary restaging and the launch of a new project to encourage environmental responsibility and to increase awareness of what it means to care for our earth. The work of Ze'eva Cohen, Paul Sanasardo, Eric Handman, Mary Frances Lloyd, and Zvi Gotheiner will define our planet's fundamental essences, the four essential Elements, to motivate our desire for clean energy, clean air, clean water and a clean and healthy earth. The evening begins with RAINWOOD by Ze'eva Cohen. Set to sounds of birds, frogs, and insects, Rainwood is a forest ritual that brings alive the creatures of the wilderness in a brilliant symphony of steps, crawls and twists. The dancers themselves become the music in a sweeping harmony of bodies and limbs. The dancers seem to be nature together and apart, nature at one with itself and nature in its multiplicity. Created especially for RDT in 1969, EARTH by Paul Sanasardo reveals the gradual evolution of technology as a furiously industrious society constructs a 'brave new world' teetering between balance and imbalance. The Lady of The Lake by Mary Frances Lloyd celebrates the mysteries, movement and crystalline beauty of water. This increasingly precious element sustains life, comforts and refreshes our senses. Playful and seductive, a dancer delights in splash, slide and submerge. Haunted by an ever-present past and caught in the limbo of memory, the marooned dancers in Eric Handman's Ghost Ship perform under a torrent of 120 pounds of falling rice leaving traces of their presence: the hieroglyphics of a vanished tribe.
