The Empress Theatre announces its upcoming production of Once upon a Mattress. This production is directed by Nanny McKenzie, with musical direction by Amy Jenkins and choreography by Wendy Brown. Once upon a Mattress tells the story of the princess and the pea and was originally produced on Broadway in 1956 starring a young Carol Burnett as the Princess of the title; in 1995 it was revived starring Sarah Jessica Parker, in the same role. Disney brought the show back in 2005 this time as a TV movie starring Tracy Ullman as the Princess and Carol Burnett as the Queen. The story, a favorite of its creators, puts a new spin on the familiar tale. If you thought you knew the story of 'The Princess and The Pea,' you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again. The Empress production stars Courtney Gardner as Princess Winnifred and features Aubrey Vance as Queen Aggravain. Nolan Mitchell portrays the mute king and Danny Eggers is featured as the court jester.
