Join Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company for a preview of its latest Alwin Nikolais reconstruction, Kaleidoscope Suite, which is scheduled to premiere in New York City in May 2010 as part of the national and international Alwin Nikolais Centennial Celebration tour. Kaleidoscope Suite constitutes four excerpts from Alwin Nikolais's ground-breaking 1956 work Kaleidoscope. Originally performed by the Nikolais Dance Theatre when it was still in operation, the work was radical in that it signified the beginning of new uses of props, stage make-up, costuming and lighting. Driven by his vision and his technique of 'total dance theater,' Nikolais's use of new materials and technologies broke new ground in the theater and became the basis for the contemporary stage. Like Nikolais's other works, including Tent and Tower, Kaleidoscope uses props, original music and fantastical light projections that provide an inventive and riveting dance theater experience for all ages. Referring to a revival of the work in the 1990s, the New York Times wrote: 'There is, still, nothing else like Kaleidoscope on the stage today-even in the Nikolais' repertory. Anyone who has not seen it, should.' This will be the 14th Nikolais reconstruction on Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company and is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces program, The Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance and the John & Marcia Price Family Foundation.
