The next show in the Empress Theatre's 2009 season is the regional favorite Arsenic and Old Lace. The play is the story of the eccentric Brewster family of Brooklyn, New York. It centers around an extremely helpful pair of sisters, who send lonely old men on their way with a special mix of elderberry wine. The family also includes Teddy, who suffers delusions that he is Theodore Roosevelt and that the Panama Canal runs through the cellar of his home. The locks he digs become convenient graves for the lonely men who fall victims to Aunt Martha and Aunt Abby's gift of kindness. Into the mix comes their nephew Mortimer discovers a body under the window seat of his aunts' home, however, the elderly women 'fess up to their deeds matter-of-factly and the events of the play become more absurd right up to a surprise ending. The play is directed by Lee Anderson and features Joan Johnson and Nancy Jensen as the sisters, with Stephen Bradford as Mortimer, and Dax Levine as his black sheep brother Jonathan.
