This sensitive and funny play by notable playwright Lee Blessing expresses the struggle for understanding among three generations of women, mingling family dynamics with humor and wit. The cast is composed of three remarkable women: a young girl, her mother and her grandmother. The oldest of the three, Dorothea, is a dreamer eccentric, strong-willed, and independent. Her daughter, Artie, is a brilliant and rational biochemist, and has separated herself from her mother while seeking a life of her own. Artie's daughter, Echo who models both her grandmother's sensitivity and her mother's intellect has been abandoned by her ambitious mother, forcing Dorothea to bring her up. When Dorothea suffers a stroke, Echo and Artie attempt to reestablish their relationship and later come to accept their mutual need for each other, summoning the courage to try to build a family life together. They must do so by learning to be charitable eleemosynary to each other.
