Kick off National Chemistry Week

The Salt Lake City section of the American Chemical Society, in partnership with Westminster College, will observe National Chemistry Week, with a public event at the Salt Lake City Library, Main Branch. This year's theme, 'Chemistry ? It's elemental,' will give families an opportunity to learn about the different elements on the periodic table and have fun participating in hands-on art and science projects. The elements are highlighted at this year's event because 2009 is the 140th anniversary of Mendeleev's Periodic Table of Elements. Several hands-on activities will explore the periodic table such as investigating the size of the different elements with bubbles, learning about the elemental composition of minerals through a treasure hunt, finding out about properties of elements by using magnets and discovering the reactive properties of oxygen. In addition there will be marbled paper making, sun prints, stop motion animation and other art projects. In total, there will be 23 different activities to engage children and family members of all ages. The National Chemistry Week Kick-off event is sponsored annually by the Salt Lake City section of the American Chemical Society. This year's event is in partnership with Westminster College and The Library Square Festival of Science and Art and brings together a wide array of partners. Other partners include the University of Utah Chemistry Club, The Imagination Celebration of Salt Lake City, The Leonardo, Mineral Collectors of Utah, Utah Museum of Fine Art, Spyhop Productions, The Mundi Project, Salt Lake Art Center, National Science Foundation and The City Library.
