Art at the Main will present Sorpresa, surprising new works by Salt Lake painter Jerry Hardesty, with an artist's reception during Gallery Stroll on October 16 from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Why surprising? Since his featured exhibition a year ago, Hardesty has found a new abstract expressionist voice to express his passion for color and texture. Though he has not left plein air landscape painting completely behind, this versatile artist now finds his inspiration in the landscape of his mind. 'I have been labeled a neo-abstract expressionist,' says Hardesty. 'Abstract painting has become my passion. It allows me to express my love of color and texture, to paint with freedom, to discover my inner soul.' There are other surprises, too. Hardesty has traded oils for acrylics, painting on both paper and canvas. And, just as he has turned up the color and texture, he has also increased the scale of his work (up to 40 inches). Visitors to Art at the Main this month are in for a nice Sorpresa, along with music by 'The Precinct' on Gallery Stroll night. Art at the Main is a not-for-profit artists' co-operative whose primary purpose is to promote and provide public access to art created by emerging artists. An important goal of Art at the Main is to support public arts education by offering periodic demonstrations, small classes and talks on various artistic techniques.
