Sacred Mountains
October 22-November 12, 2009
Add Review/CommentWestminster College will host a multimedia seminar entitled 'Sacred Mountains - Exploring the World's Mountain Geography & Culture' by Jonathan Duncan in the Special Events Room in the Dolores Dore Eccles Health, Wellness, and Athletic Center. This seminar series will examine a variety of mountain regions around the world, including the Himalayas, the sacred Buddhist mountains of China, the Patagonian Andes, the Alaska Range, Antarctica and high and wild geography of the American West. Jonathan Duncan, Westminster's Global Studies Fellow and an award-winning mountain photographer, will present multimedia presentations that will explore how a region's mountains affect its culture and spirituality. The curriculum will be broken down into four, two-hour evening sessions, each dedicated to a different region, culture and theme: October 22: This class will introduce the ways that mountains influence human psychology and how they are represented in mythology and various religions. October 29: This class will be dedicated to mountains of Asia, and specifically the significance of mountain geography in the philosophy of Buddhism. November 5: The third evening will explore the mountains of the New World, from Alaska to Tierra de Fuego, and the role of mountains in traditional Native American life and culture. November 12: The final section of the seminar will be dedicated to mountains and the modern day 'Heroes Journey,' which will examine the role of high and wild places in today's world.
