In ninety uninterrupted minutes The Exonerated tells the stories of six wrongfully convicted prisoners who spent between two and twenty-two years on Death Row - and survived! Using interviews, letters, court transcripts, case files, and public records, this 2003 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Award winner paints a picture of an American criminal justice system gone horribly wrong. Three black men, two white men, and one white woman stand in for hundreds of others who were robbed of their freedom, but not their spirit: Delbert Tibbs, a poet whose only crime was hitchhiking while black; Gary Geiger, an organic farmer convicted of murdering his parents; David Keaton, a frightened 18-year old who lost his faith; Kerry Max Cook, who watched over a hundred of his fellow detainees go to their death; Robert Earl Hayes, guilty of dating a white girl; and Sunny Jacobs, kept on death row thirteen years after someone else confessed to the crime. Moving from first-person monologue to courtroom and prison scenes, The Exonerated weaves together six gripping tales of systemic failure and human resilience.
