Sophia Esterman grew up near Washington, D.C. She studied art at Carnegie Mellon University and earned a bachelor's degree at Columbia University. She lived in New York City for nearly ten years, during which she studied painting with contemporary artist Ophrah Shemesh in addition to studying painting, printmaking, and art history at Columbia. Esterman worked as a painting teacher, as a printmaker, privately for various artists (including Kiki Smith) and at the Lower East Side Printshop, as an illustrator for the children's book Now...for My Next Number and exhibited her artwork. In 2007 she spent two months as an artist-in-residence at Mano y Mente in New Mexico. In the fall of 2008, she moved to Salt Lake City, where she enjoys teaching painting privately and at several Salt Lake County Senior Centers.
