Weber State University’ Department of Performing Arts is the host for the 2010 Northwest Region Conference of the Americal College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) March 17-20. Participants from dozens of universty and college dance programs will convene for several days of master classes, faculty seminars, opportunities for student and faculty exchanges outside of the studio and many performances. Three dynamic and highly respected adjudicators: Ze’eva Cohen, Adam Sklute, and Helanius J. Wilkins; and guest artist and teacher, Bill Shannon, will share their expertise and inspire students and teachers alike. Most events take place in the Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts.
A celebrity concert sponsored by WSU Office of Cultural Affairs on Wednesday, March 17, will feature “the crutch-master” Bill Shannon, born with a degenerative hip condition who developed a way to express himself through dance and skateboarding on crutches. The conference will conclude with a Gala Concert featuring winning entires in the conference’s competition Saturday, March 20, 7 pm. Both major concerts will be presented in the Austad Auditorium. Tickets for the events are available through the Dee Events Center Ticket Office, 1-800-WSU-TIKS or weberstatetickets.com.
Erik Sterns, the conference organizer, says “This is a great opportunity for WSU to host the conference and attract its many participants to WSU and Ogden. ACDFA values diversity and maintains a commitment to the development of conferences which reflect and give value to the various forms, styles, cultural traditions and aesthetic dimensions of dance in performance. The organization encourages the attention to diversity within informal and formally adjudicated concerts, master classes and panel discussion and/or lectures. Institutions can attend and participate in the full array of scheduled events, whether or not they present choreography for adjudication. The experience of taking master classes, viewing the concerts, and listening to the adjudicators’ comments, as well as the energy exchange among dancers and faculty from other schools has always proven invaluable for participants, regardless of their levels of dance experience.”
