Weber State University Department of Performing Arts WSU Chamber Choir will present a program of popular music from America's 1900s , Music from Twain's Time, in the Hetzel-Hoellein Room, Stewart Library, on the WSU campus. Selections from the recent musical, "Big River," will reflect Mark Twain's story of Huckleberry Finn in contemporary culture. They will be included with popular songs from the early 1800s, the Civil War, the Gold Rush days, the composer Stephen Foster, cowboy songs and sea shanties, and a collection of folk tunes set by Aaron Copland. "Simple Gifts," "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Clementine" are examples of this music that are still popular today. A brief narrative will give some background details on the music's origin and significance. The audience will be invited to sing along on several of the most familiar of the folk tunes. Expect a program of beautiful harmony, musical humor and entertaining insight into the people of 1800s in America.
