Nicknamed after a novel by Jean Paul Richter, Mahler specified his First Symphony was in no way "about" the book. With an offstage trumpet doubling the first trumpet melody "in the distance" and a funeral march based on the children's song Fr?re Jacques, "Titan" showcases the darker side of Romanticism.
