May 29-August 7, 2010
Add Review/Comment
No time for art lessons? How about a free two-hour art demonstration?
That¹s the deal eleven artists from Art at the Main Gallery are offering the public a completely free, low-commitment opportunity to watch and learn from real artists on Saturday afternoons, 1-3 p.m., at the main Salt Lake City Library. Each demonstration will be different, reflecting the particular styles and skills of each artist.
The series of demonstrations starts Saturday, May 29, with Kent Downing showing visitors how to find their visual voice through doodling, and runs through August 7. Each Saturday, except June 26 and July 24, artists will set up tables and chairs outside Art at the Main Gallery on the ground floor of the Library and provide an intimate glimpse into their creative processes. Topics include:
June 5 Debra Marin and Candace Skrabut demonstrate techniques for painting water and for painting correct values (lights to darks).
June 12 William James takes papier mache way beyond grade school, achieving flowing organic forms, including a 7-foot tall iris.
June 19 Caryn Feeney shows how to paint with watercolor on a clayboard surface to capture the beauty and personalities of animals.
July 3 Anne Becker and Nancy Swanson demonstrate ways to turn books into new art forms.
July 10 Kristine Groll shows how to think backwards using loose watercolor washes to make a subject appear.
July 17 Sue Martin shows how an underpainting to establish value, texture or pattern can get a painting off to a great start.
July 31 John Stout demonstrates how to get the effects of watercolor using acrylic on a variety of surfaces even fabric.
August 7 Colleen Reynolds shows how to capture the joys and humor of daily life by cartooning the characters in your life.
Art at the Main is a not-for-profit artists¹ co-operative gallery whose primary purpose is to promote and provide public access to art created by emerging artists. An important goal of Art at the Main is to support public arts education by offering periodic demonstrations, small classes and talks on various artistic techniques.
